W.I.S.H. – Weekly Insights for Spiritual Health

Read:  Matthew 22:36-40, Exodus 20:12-17

The 5th thru 10th of the Ten Commandments, help us in our relationships with others.  God cares about both our relationship with God, and our relationships with others.  God also wants to produce a healthy community in which people care for and respect one another.  The commandments help create healthy families, build trust between people, establish appropriate boundaries, and foster respect.

  5.  Honor your father and mother

  6.  You shall not murder

  7.  You shall not commit adultery

  8.  You shall not steal

  9.  You shall not lie

10.  You shall not covet

These Commandments help create healthy faith, families, and community. From that foundation a healthy nation emerges.  Just laws, fairly applied and faithfully followed, help produce peace, justice and righteousness. God’s intent was that this nation would be a shining light, an example, a witness to the other nations of the world.  Anthropologists and archeologists have noted how the law of God’s people was superior to the laws and codes of the kingdoms and empires that surrounded them (i.e. Hammurabi’s Code) in principles of justice such as due process, need for verifiable evidence, liability, restitution, and equal protection under the law.

“ 5 Thus says God, the LORD, who created the heavens and stretched them out, who spread forth the earth and what comes from it, who gives breath to the people upon it and spirit to those who walk in it: 6 “I am the LORD, I have called you in righteousness, I have taken you by the hand and kept you; I have given you as a covenant to the people, a light to the nations, 7 to open the eyes that are blind, to bring out the prisoners from the dungeon, from the prison those who sit in darkness.” – Isaiah 42:5-7

Faith, freedom, justice, peace, and righteousness, these are worthy building blocks for establishing a nation, and they are qualities of the Kingdom of God.
