Rev. Duane Harris

Rev. Duane Harris

Lead Pastor

Hi, my name is Duane Harris and I am privileged to serve as the pastor of Auburn United Methodist Church. I have been serving churches for 30 years, having begun as a young student pastor in Columbus, Ohio in a small congregational church while I attended seminary.

Some have asked me over the years, “What’s your favorite part of being a pastor?” I have struggled with the question because there are many things I enjoy about being a pastor. I love baptizing people as a physical sign of God’s love for them as well as marking the beginning of a relationship with the congregation. I get charged by serving in soup kitchens and mission trips, caring for “the least of these” as we would care for Christ. I find it rewarding to lead worship and remind us all that first and foremost — above all else — the greatest of all of God’s gift is love and that — when pressed — Jesus is quite clear that of all matters pertaining to religious expression the most important is to “love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with all your mind; and your neighbor as yourself” (Luke 10:27). That is Jesus’ core value and I get to proclaim it over and over again.

In my personal life, I’ve been married to my wife, Lynn, for 32 years as of this writing. We have an adult son who lives in Wisconsin with his wife, Aimee, both of whom bring us great joy. Our home includes a disabled Golden Retriever, Secret, who has enriched our lives in ways that can’t be measured. In my spare time I enjoy working in my shop doing woodworking and other DIY projects. I don’t spend enough time immersed in God’s incredible creation via canoeing, kayaking, hiking, deer hunting, fly fishing and other outdoor pursuits. Photography is also something in which I enjoy dabbling. Finally, last year — challenged by a parishioner, I ran my first 5K and have a goal of continuing that new-found pleasure in the years to come.
