Read: Acts 1:8

“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”

“Necessity is the mother of invention” – Plato? Nobody’s completely sure where that proverb came from, but the Greek philosopher Plato said something rather close in his writings about 400 years before Jesus was born in the Holy Land. The saying has its critics, but I think it’s right on. Case-in-point Church worship during the COVID 19 corona virus pandemic. We are exploring options for how we may continue to worship God and practice our faith, without risking anyone’s health or life. Our latest initiative – (say a prayer for us, people) – “Drive-In Church”! If the best laid plans work out we will offer worship in our parking lot, in the safety and comfort of your car this coming Sunday, at 11 am. All you’ll need is a working car radio. Not everyone will be eager to do so, some may prefer “pajama church”, that’s why we’ll also post the scripture and message on our website and Facebook. Still, I’ll admit my curiosity and excitement at the prospect of seeing our parking lot full of the people of God – ready to worship in a new way.

When the Roman Empire was persecuting Christians – having made it a crime to be a Christian – the church went underground, literally! They worshipped in the catacombs underground! The catacombs were a network of burial vaults, and the pagan Romans were a bit intimidated by death, and were afraid to enter them; so they didn’t bother the Christian fellowships. The Christians were not afraid of death, heck! we began with an empty tomb and a risen Savior!

When the Pharisees wanted Jesus to silence His disciples on Palm Sunday, during His triumphant entry into Jerusalem, He replied, “I tell you, if they keep quiet, the stones will cry out.” The word of God will not be silenced; love will find a way!

When Jeremiah refrained from preaching God’s word, his bones began to burn within him (Jeremiah 20:9). When Jonah didn’t want to preach to Nineveh, God changed his mind with a one-way ticket to Nineveh on the world’s first submarine. Indeed, the Lord will not be without a witness (Acts 14:17). You, and me, share this great privilege of being His witnesses, here and now, and throughout the world.

Shalom, Pastor Rob
