Who is the band “One True King”?

One True King is a contemporary Christian rock band, reminiscent of yesteryear with a solid classic rock sound—Third Day meets Casting Crowns. The mission of our music is to dig deep into what it means to walk with Christ without sugar coating the reality of life. Our music looks life square in the eye and doesn’t blink. It admits that we are real people with real problems, but affirms we have a real God who has real solutions. Though our music blurs genre lines, it carries an authentic message of the forgiveness, grace, restoration and relationship that is available to everyone through Jesus Christ. Our individual testimonies of God’s rescuing love fuel our passion for reaching out to hurting souls inside and outside the body of Christ.

What is the “One True King” connection to OWOS?

Chris Williams, the keyboard player, is a member of Auburn UMC where the OWOS project director, Tamara Klida, also attends. Realizing what an awesome project this was, he wanted to be able to help somehow. He approached the band about playing at their end of the week celebration, and the band agreed it was a great mission project to support. In 2017 & 2018, they put on a free concert for the neighborhoods where the work took place.

Seeing first hand what a difference this project was making, they decided they wanted to do more. In January 2019, during a terrible ice/snow storm, they held a benefit concert to raise money to support the OWOS project. Over 200 people braved the elements to come out for this concert and $1000 was collected.

This year they have moved the concert to the Saginaw area, where they have a bigger venue and a goal of collecting at least $3000 for One Week One Street. There is no overhead cost for this concert, the band receives nothing and is providing all the sound and lighting, 100% of what is collected goes to the One Week One Street project.

What is the One Week One Street project?

Our project, “One Week, One Street”, began with an idea to organize a one week local mission project to help meet the needs of people in Saginaw using volunteers from churches in the Great Lakes Bay Region. This effort is accomplished through a yearly week-long revitalization effort which takes place the last week of June. Since our start in 2012, we have successfully collaborated with local churches, and many businesses, community organizations, and non-profits. We believe that the region cares about Saginaw and its residents and by pooling resources and collaborating with existing organizations, we can make a difference.

How has One Week One Street made a difference in the Saginaw Community?

Here is a summary of what we have done from 2013 to 2019:

  • 188 houses received improvements (painting, landscaping, exterior improvements, etc.)
  • 2 community gardens
  • 22 vacant lots cleared
  • 2 outdoor murals painted
  • 1 indoor mural painted
  • 57 porch/step repaired
  • 1 neighborhood park with a covered pavilion
  • 2 play structures installed
  • 1 community tool shed built
  • 2 new roofs
  • 100+ trees cut
  • 1 youth cafe

How do you get that much work done in such a short time?

We can’t do it without you. One Week One Street is completely volunteer driven. We work with over 24 area churches, 18 organizations and business to accomplish this huge project.  Since 2013, volunteers have served over 34,860 volunteer hours!

Where do you get the money to do all this work?

We currently have 24 sponsors that help support this mission by donations of money, materials, tents, and even the lunches we serve the volunteers. We also apply for grants and have this one big fundraiser concert.

How can you help?

Our 2020 project will take place in:
the Saginaw High neighborhood in East Saginaw,
June 22-26, 2020,
9am – 4pm daily.
